This new edition of the Verdict of the Tree - explores Xeer Ciise, an ancient Somali system of democratic governance, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, highlighting its cultural, legal, and political significance. This publication contributes to Afrospectives' work on endigenous knowledge and practices.

Beyond Mimicry critically examines African endogenous governance systems, exploring their potential to address contemporary crises. It offers reflections and policy recommendations for African decision-makers seeking alternative solutions grounded in these systems.

Renowned and distinguished African scholars presented their research and discussed theories and practices of endogenous governance in Africa and how these can and have been be revalorized in the 21st century.

This event brought together African scholars, experts and practitioners who have undertaken research on the geopolitics of health, on African health policies, and on the potential of endogenous medical knowledge and practices.

Jointly organised by AFROSPECTIVES, Kartiye Libe, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, the international symposium was held from 11 to 16 April 2023 on Reunion Island as part of the commemoration of the 220th anniversary of the death of Toussaint Louverture.
